Puberphonia is a voice disorder caused by incorrect use of the laryngeal muscles in response to the rapid physiological changes that occur during puberty. It is characterised by a high pitch and pitch breaks, as well as a weak, breathy and rough voice. While this condition is more apparent in males, females can also be affected. Psychological impacts are often associated with puberphonia because of embarrassment, teasing from peers, lowered self esteem and avoidance of social situations.
