sulcus vocalis

What is a Sulcus Vocalis?

A sulcus vocalis is a groove in the vocal fold that affects vocal fold vibration and allows excess air to escape during voicing. It is thought to develop from factors including laryngeal infections, poor healing of old lesions, vocal overuse, or traumatic injury. It’s development can also be congenital.

Treatment

Surgical management and voice therapy are the treatment options for sulcus vocalis. Voice therapy is considered the first line of treatment and may also be recommended following surgery performed by an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist.
